Yes, it’s true… two parrots have been flying around our garden for the last few days. Just to remind you, we live in the north of France, not the tropics – so this was quite a surprise. They make a lot of noise, but so far neither of them has said “Bonjour” and no dapper pirate has come looking for them. Has anyone else spotted parrots in Normandy?
This one was hanging out in the cherry tree… I wonder why?!!

Hello,
I think that your parrots are Eastern Rosellas, an Australian parakeet. http://www.parrots.org/index.php/encyclopedia/profile/eastern_rosella/
Probably escapees from an aviary, they should do well in summer but have a problem surviving in the winter when food supply becomes scarce.
Best wishes,
Alison

I think you’re right, they look identical! We didn’t see the parrots today, it’s possible they’ve moved on. Will keep looking…

We had one in the garden last year. It was, I think, an escapee as it seemed quite baffled. In the end a hen harrier got it.

Hi Scarlet,
What fun! I remember seeing green parakeets in Surrey many years ago and they are now well established, adapted to their new climate and in breeding colonies. I hope yours returns to say “Hi” from time to time and escapes the clutches of hungry falcons. If it was domesticated, it might take to feeding from a bird table or feeder.
As for the comfrey, no problem, we’ll sort something out whenever you want some. Email me direct and we’ll discuss when’s the best time.
Cheers!

Parrots hanging out in the garden? Yes, please! (Although they would probably eat what little tomato crop I’m getting since the excessive spring rains drowned three plants and water-stressed half the remaining fruit.)
